Essentially, the vehicle was redesigned as a mobile artillery tank, with heavy frontal armour and the primary weapon not installed in a turret, instead in a fixed forward position. Fixed into the newly named B1 chassis, the 320mm has no ability to track from side to side on it's own, instead requiring the tank to be turned. This is not too much of a problem, as the M220 series has a reliable and responsive control system. The rifle does, however, have excellent vertical tracking, in part because the pivoting mechanism was derived from a standard self-propelled artillery piece. All of these make the rifle somewhat difficult to put on target, but it is no great challenge to any crew experienced with turretless tanks. To say the M220B1 Soltan has no turret is not true. A small, almost unarmoured machine-gun post is mounted on top of the tank and can rotate 360 degrees, giving the tank fair infantry protection. The Soltan Support Tank has a crew of six. A commander, driver, gunner, loader, engineer/assistant loader and a turret machine-gunner/communications officer. This crew is a close knit family, and is responsible for the smooth running of such a complicated, and still effectively experimental weapon system. The Soltan is often used purely in support where it can be driven into a position from which it can shell enemy forces from a distance. This is important, as the Soltan has heavy frontal armour at the expense of it's side and rear, and also has little backup weaponary. It requires the support of other ground units better suited to mulitple roles, or will be swallowed up quickly by a rapidly moving enemy. Nevertheless, the 320mm rifle is a massively powerful weapon, capable of crippling heavy mechs with one shot. Assault mech pilots would be insane to consider rushing a phalanx of Soltan tanks head-on without them being already enngaged or previously eliminated. The greatest fear for a Soltan crew is the everpresent threat of an airstrike, against which the tank has no defence. Supporting the Soltan with Pilum AA missile carriers like the Gopher and the Ganymede is the only solid defence from aerial bombardment. ºWeapon system and vehicle designed by James Taplin (BigglesMKIII).
