The competition was for a scout Mech to be assigned to the Mech regiments of the Terran Hegemony. The Ranger was the NAU design. Utilizing a foamed Titanium-Steel alloy for the skeletal structure this design was able to mount a Colt-Skoda class Five 150mm Autocannon and a ton of Ammo to complement the three Westinghouse Medium Lasers and the Arclight Target Aquisition System. Using the Mk1 active probe allowed the Ranger to find hidden opposition units. The Ranger was Accepted by the Hegemony armed forces for development and deployment. The final Production contract went to GM-Nissan of North America. GM-Nissan Produced the Ranger until it was rendered obsolete by second generation scout mechs in the early 2500's. over 1400 rangers were finally run off the GM-Nissan assembly lines, after nearly 500 years less than 100 are still known to be in service, most belonging to the smaller mercenary units scattered throughout the Inner Sphere 9 The Ranger made a name for itself during the Terran Hegemony and the rise of the Star League. With the Colt-Skoda 150mm the Ranger was capable of targeting and hitting at long range. The three Westinghouse Lasers gave it a potent punch at medium to short range. It's DuPont "Starguard" Ceramet armor made it one of the heaviest armored mechs in it's weight class capable of taking heavier hits without damage longer. The Arclight targeting system gave it the ability to act as a forward artillery co-ordinator after locating opponents with it's MK1 Beagle probe. 4 After 500 years little is known of the Ranger's history in combat. Altough the few remaing Rangers still operational are making a good showing in it's original assignment as a scout. There are Five Rangers still in their original configuration on New Texas in the Rimward Alliance Museum at Austin City. There was only one known variant of the RNG-1. It was Designated as the RNG-2LNG Long Ranger. The Long Ranger replaced the Auto-cannon with a Large Laser jump jets and additional heatsinks, and was assigned as a deep penetration raider for Special Operation Forces. — At it's period of greatest use the Ranger was assigned to every Regiment of the Terran Hegemony in both scout companies and general line companies.fOriginally published in TR3058, pub in 1995 As modified to fit RS3055/3058 pub in 1996 Original File From www.heavymetalpro.com/files/3055-58.zip Fluff Text added by Christopher Robin Perkins (Cameron Chaddock) (Editors Note: the actual mackie was MUCH lighter... but still had the same weapons, it MAY have been powered by an ICE engine as well... I have seen it listed as such, but i cannot remember where, possibly the early Black Widow Sourcebook or Wolfs Dragoons Source book, it had no fluff and just was a spec out to be turned into a sheet by hand... and probably followed no known rules) (Game note: Because the Mackie was the first BattleMech, it mounted a prototype engine, cockpit, and armor. These components are heavier than standard, and so the Mackie does not adhere to standard BattleTech game rules.)
