Using an XL engine, and having its CASE in the wrong torso to protect both mech and pilot from ammo explosions, resulted in many of these mechs being lost in action, and their pilots killed. In addition, the mech's use of single heatsinks left the mech unable to cope with the heat output of its new ER PPCs, let alone its other weapons, and also wasted a huge amount of tonnage that could be put to better use. This left the MAD-5A severely undergunned when facing other assault mechs, even those more than ten tons lighter than it. Looking back to their original design, the Dragoons saw the three main strengths of the MAD-4A Marauder II: Firepower, maneuverability, and durability. Of these three requirements, the MAD-5A satisfied only one, maneuverability. A redesign was thus prompted, taking the mech's design back to its roots. The MAD-6A more closely resembles the original MAD-4A Marauder II than its predecessor, with a Fusion Engine replacing the bulky and easily-damaged XL. The 29 single heatsinks were replaced by 16 doubles, greatly reducing the tonnage and space requirements of the heatsinks while still increasing their capacity to eliminate heat. A massive Zeus Slingshot Gauss Rifle with 24 shots replaces the 5A's LB-10X autocannon, and the armor has been upgraded to Ferro Fibrous, reducing the armor's tonnage while still giving the mech the maximum possible armor protection. To protect both pilot and mech in the event of a Gauss Rifle explosion, CASE has been mounted in the right torso. This version upgrades the two arm-mounted Medium Lasers of the MAD-5A to Extended Range versions, and adds a third ER Medium Laser to the head of the mech. In keeping with the original design philosophy, this version continues to mount jumpjets, making it one of the most mobile 100-tonners in the Inner Sphere. In the few battles this mech has been seen in, it has proven itself to be an extremely deadly adversary. The few pilots lucky enough to survive encounters with it could hardly believe what they had seen. The mech just kept taking hit after hit, but it just wouldn't go down, and it kept hammering back, with withering firepower. This is possibly one of the deadliest assault mechs in the Inner Sphere, and pilots should take extreme caution if they encounter one. Designed and entered by Michael "Wolf" Wright of Phoenix, Arizona. I wanted to make the Marauder II feared again, as the MAD-5A was really an awful design. This was designed before the MAD-4S came out. Now, it could be seen as a cheaper alternative to the MAD-4S, or perhaps as an upgrade of older MAD-4A's. This mech does the job of making the Marauder II as feared in 3050+ as it was in 3025.
