At 740 meters in length, and massing 345 kilotons, the Leviathan is an enormous vessel, roughly the same length as most Star League era cruisers. Even today, few JumpShips have ever been built as large as the Leviathan. Equally, few JumpShips have every reached the capacity of the Leviathan. Carrying an impressive seven DropShip docking collars, the ancient Leviathan falls in between the modern Star Lord and Monolith class JumpShips in terms of capacity. However, unlike either Star Lord or Monolith, the Leviathan was much more capable of independent action, thanks to 1000 tons of hydrogen fuel and reaction mass, and a cargo hold of nearly 700 tons capacity. For crew health, two 110-meter grav decks provided artificial "spin" gravity for the crew of 68, as well as passengers aboard the DropShips. Finally, a full dozen emergency egress vehicles, and berthing for a single shuttle, rounded out the vessel's capabilities. Where the Leviathan was flawed, however, was in its maintenance requirements, needing a larger crew than more modern JumpShips. Further, unlike the smaller Star Lord, crew accomodations were nowhere near as comfortable, while the later Monolith's greater carry capacity encouraged shipping lines to switch to the newer vessel - a Monolith with a permanently-assigned Buccaneer had access to greater fuel and cargo stores than a Leviathan, took fewer personnel to operate, and still had a greater carry capacity than the older JumpShip. Worse, the Leviathan had a disturbing tendency to break down, with as many as two to three of its docking collars often failing, requiring frequent maintenance. It is suspected that this might have led to the disappearance of the JumpShip Raiden, carrying a Draconis Combine mechanized infantry unit in the early 26th Century. While efforts were made to correct the problem, they were never entirely successful. The Amaris Coup spelled the death knell for the Leviathan, with the yards producing the ship destroyed in the fighting. With the ship falling in popularity for over a century, thanks to the more luxurious Star Lord, and the new Monolith proving far more capable, no one in the Inner Sphere was interested in putting the ship back into production. What is surprising, then, is what the Clans did with the surviving Monolith class JumpShips their SLDF ancestors took on the Exodus with them. Removing three of the docking collars, and refitting several other systems aboard the vessels, the Clans were able to fit the vessels with a lithium fusion battery system and an array of defensive weaponry. While few of these original refits remain, the resulting design, the Odyssey, has proven highly successful in Clan service, and are still manufactured today. oDCV Raiden - ship disappeared in the early 26th Century ISV ????? - JumpShip owned by Hannibal's Hermits, 3067 qDesign and fluff by Jason "GiovanniBlasini" Donahue. Totally conjectural, of course, but based on what we know from Far Country and Mercenary Supplemental II. We know it can carry at least seven DropShips, that it's smaller than the Monolith, but still a pretty big JumpShip. We also know it's old, that it has to have been built after 2470 (as per MSII) since it has docking collars, and that it can't carry the gaggle of Unions and Leopards that Hannibal's Hermits field. So, we've got a JumpShip that, per AT2R rules, has to be at least 325 kilotons. It's got to earn the name "Leviathan" by being big. Meanwhile, the Clans field this goofy 345 kiloton JumpShip with four docking collars and a lithium fusion battery. The more I worked on my Leviathan, the more it resembled the Odyssey. Finally, I figured, "what the heck" and made it the forerunner to the Odyssey. (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown)[ none ]
