Well-armed and armored, this spheroid craft can deliver a company of BattleMechs, together with their MechWarriors, technical support crews, and aerospace support into the hottest landing zone. The Gypsie, is based off the 3,500-ton Union, it also contains a number of design features that are found on the Union. The Gypsie `Mech facility like that union Union is divided into three areas. The drop chutes, located below the two Mech bays, can deploy a lance of Mechs while the craft is in space or atmosphere. Immediately above these chutes is the lower of the two Mech bays, which contains cubicles for a lance of Mechs, and provides access to the Gypsies two fighter and small craft bays. The second Mech bay can hold two full lances of Mechs and a lance of heavy vehicles. Eight BattleMech cubicles line the walls of the bay and open onto a large circular walkway, 50 meters in diameter. The heavy vehicle bays are nestled around the walls as well mixed in between the `Mech bays. A trio of large cranes mounted in the ceiling of the upper bay enable crews to make extensive repairs in the field, and these cranes can also be used in the lower nay via a massive hatch in the deck. The original Unions, launched in 2708, were equipped with crew facilities that would be considered luxurious today. These facilities included a number of double occupancy quarters, and roomy mess and recreation rooms. However, a series of hydraulic and electrical malfunctions on vessels produced after the commencement of the Succession Wars led designers to replace these facilities with communal bunkrooms and multipurpose lounge/recreation areas. The modifications also affected the air-circulation system, resulting in a noticeable atmospheric taint that often proves irritating to first-time passengers. In July, 3055, Federated-Boeing Interstellar launched a new, refitted version of the Union, at the same they released the Gypsie for full production. The Gypsies incorporates all the new features that were put into the upgraded Union's. The crew deck has double-occupancy cabins for the majority of the crew and passengers and a small number of luxurious single-occupancy berths for senior officers. The infantry platoon area was expanded to include a combined briefing/messing facility and and extensive medical facility. Federated-Boeing also replaced the under-powered air-filtration unit on the new craft, using one more appropriate to the Gypies size and complement. The Gypsie is designed to reinforced `Mech company into combat. It gives the unit all the comforts of the Union with with the added benefits of having the room to carry armor and infantry. The small craft bays normally carry two Mk VII landing crafts which can carry a fully loaded IFV such as the Maxim along with its infantry compliment to any spot that it is needed most, because of its VSTOL capabilities. This gives the `Mech commander the option of flying the infantry behind enemy lines for deep strike operations. The `Mech cubicals also have an extra hidden feature, within each cubical there is extra room for replacement parts storage, this tonnage is figured into the cubicals tonnage, by using stronger light weight carbon alloys Federated Boeing was able to free 25 tons from the weight of the cradles and gantries of the cubicles. This freed up weight was then used to create parts storage within each cubical at no extra weight cost when constructing the dropship.
