Transporting the mech back to their headquarters at Hamilton, the mercenaries turned it over to Archangel Technologies, a company founded by the original leader of the Daredevils. After examining the Fafnir, the R&D department started working on a reverse engineering of the design, to possibly make better use of the weaponry it possessed. Though slower than the Fafnir, the mech was more heavily armed and armored. One of the scientists, a Tolkien fan, dubbed the mech 'Grond', after the massive siege weapon of Mordor. The name stuck, and the Grond battlemech is expected to reach production in 3067.DThe Grond is a decidedly different mech than the Fafnir. The engine was changed to a smaller 200 fusion engine. Though the speed was reduced, it was decided that would be best for it, with the weaponry it carries. It keeps the two heavy gauss rifles of the Fafnir, and adds in fully functional arms as well as two standard PPCs, increasing the range of its weaponry. In addition, the ammuntion is ample for extended battle with the gauss rifles, and often the Grond will be paired with more mobile units, such as the Wolf Hunter or Gladiator IS designs, to protect its flanks. ùThe only variant currently projected is one commissioned specifically for Comstar and the SLDF. The PPCs are reduced to ER Large Lasers, and a half-ton of armor is removed. This allows the mech to carry two medium lasers, and a C3i network system. Currently the Grond is slated to be deployed to the Robertson's Daredevils, as well as other mercenary units within the Arc-Royal Defense Cordon. In addition, the Davion Assault Guards have received a lance of Gronds, as the line is scheduled to begin full production in early 3068.Designed by Malakim @ 2003.
