They found a large, eager clientele base among the middle and upper class businesses which needed rapid transport from their places of business to the main spaceport located in Four Cities for interstellar shipping. These businesses were more than willing a pay a relatively small fee to purchase fleets of small craft, capable of landing in the businesses' parking lots and taking off from 300-meter-long paved strips of ferrocrete - many of these same businesses had straight entranceways that stretch up to twice that length and which proved to be well-suited to a CDV's take-off run.K The CDV series of aerodyne small craft are equipped with spartan crew quarters which nevertheless appear quite comfortable compared to the TAV series'. The removal of over 3/4s of the TAV's armor permits the expansion of the CDV's crew quarters, permitting a small semi-private stateroom for the three-man flight crew as well as adding a fourth position for a loadmaster, who is responsible for securing the CDV's cargo and is charged with its care from the time the cargo enters the hold to the time it is offloaded at the spaceport. The use of less-advanced composites for the CDV's armor (vs. the TAVs), as well as the use of cheaper but less efficient engines, also permits the inclusion of a life boat on the CDV, a welcome change from the TAV's fatalistic approach to crew safety. The one thing that DIDN'T change from the TAV's conversion to civilian use was the massive 60-ton cargo bay. This bay includes a large number of tie-downs capable of securing practically anything with a competent loadmaster, and is a huge selling point for the CDV. This bay was designed to accept the standardized 20-ton cargo containers used throughout the Inner Sphere, and it provides easy access for forklifts or industrial exoskeletons. Some bays have even been modified to provide storage areas for modified civilian Sea Bee powered armor, which have removed the modular eqiupment adapters built into the suits' forearms in favor of fixed forklift attachments capable of lifting 2 tons per suit. The large fuel tanks included in the CDV's design are key to the design's sub-orbital transport capabilities. Eight tons of fuel is generally sufficient to allow a CDV to achieve a sub-orbital or low-orbital position sufficient to allow it to reach anywhere on the planet within two hours, permitting rapid delivery of materials from even remote parts of the planet to the huge spaceport in the capitol city of Four Cities. Though normally the CDV lands like a standard aerospace craft, it's VSTOL equipment allows it to land vertically at crowded port facilities or even in paved parking lots when necessary. Like the TAV, the CDV is actually an entire family of small craft. Though the CD-SRHL is the most popular, it's longer-ranged cousin - the -LRHL - is gaining in popularity among interstellar shipping firms, and with the companies with mining concerns in the asteroid belts between the second and third planets of the Tigress system. Other models include a number of passenger models, ranging from steerage-class bulk transports to a number of luxurious single-famliy craft that have been outfitted as personal pleasurecraft. ? The CDV-SRHL has been purchased by a number of large and mid-sized corporations on Tigress, and a number of small transport firms have acquired the -SRHL and its longer-ranged cousin, the -LRHL. Even a few off-world concerns have purchased CDVs as an inexpensive alternative to DropShip transportation; after all, practically all JumpShips (and even WarShips) have small craft facilities, and it's rare to find all bays full. Additionally, CDVs allow shippers to avoid delays on time-sensitive shipments at jump points by allowing a quick move to a different JumpShip.
