The Cicada is famous for its speed, but equally infamous for its problems; it has long been thought of as a specialist without a role. The FWL was quick to field up-gunned models like the CDA-3M, as new technology became available. However, these new models did little to address the Cicada's thin armor, lack of a defined role, and basic mechanical problems. They also failed to fit the Cicada into the FWLM's new battle doctrines. Accordingly, a new version of the Cicada was designed, in response to criticism from units in the field. This new model, the CDA-4M, should ensure that the Cicada will have a place in the FWLM for a long time to come.óThe CDA-4M is based on the CDA-3M model, but dispenses with the 3M's big guns in favor of heavier armor, and other role-defining changes. The CDA-4M is armed with four ML's in its arms, giving it more firepower than the first 2A model, but less than the 3M. The 3M's SPL has been replaced with a TAG system, and the heavy UAC/5 with a Narc Beacon. Leftover mass is devoted to armor. And finally, the Cicada's old HartfordCo cooling system, long known for its overheating problems, has been replaced by a modern double-sink system. The end result is a fast medium spotter, a near perfect fit for the FWLM's new missile doctrines. The CDA-4M is also the first version to actually be "tougher than a Locust" as the original 2A model was advertised. jThe CDA-4M has been well received by the FWLM. It is expected to see much wider use than previous models.
