The high ground clearance, wide stance of the quad U'Mech made it possible to step over a lot of the downed 'Mechs and use both of the 50-ton lift hoists to get the 'Mech off of the ground and allow a recovery flatbed to slide under the disabled 'Mech, if it could not be done with just one of the lift hoists. The BRU has many capabilities as standard equipment. The Command Console in the head is normally used by the Senior Tech to direct the recover and rescue operations. It is not uncommon for the Senior Tech to suddenly find himself as the BattleField Commander as the opposing forces R & R forces showed up to strip the battlefield. The heavy-duty gyro allows the BRU to take a large amount of damage, providing it gets through the armor and at 20-tons it's nearly maxed out at 99.07%. The Utility Mech structure uses the less costly, just as compact but heavier standard structure. Each leg holds a under armor 1-ton storage box for tools, first aid and a place to hide if attacked. There is a 1-ton liquid's container in the left torso. It has a fill and empty port on the underside of the U'Mech so if there is more hazardous liquids that need to be recovered than there is storage space in the trucks it can be put there. The turret has a non-removable ER Medium Laser. This has a video camera bore sighted to it. Its primary purpose is to cut apart things that need to be chopped up, or to detonate things that should have detonated in the first place. The other 15-tons of the turret can be filled as desired. Tech's and their ride's aren't worth writing down. Just ask any of those high priced BattleMech pilots. Unless they are one of those fools that got their ride shot out from under themselves and yelled for an extraction for themselves and their ride. Even then you have to get them falling down drunk several times to hear most of it, and even then its all about them. The bums. Usually they are right. Just trudge out to the battlefield, recover our personnel, catch their personnel, gather up our equipment, gather up their equipment, detonate the dud ammo, and clean up the mess left over. Let the locals know they can have the field back. Drop the scrap off at the local scrap yard. Return to base and start going over the salvage. But occasionally it gets a little interesting. Then it depends on how good of a bluffer/negotiator the Senior Tech is and how much firepower is available to him. Then the battlefield may get split up or yielded or a new fight breakout for the salvage. * Pull out the 15-ton Gauss Rifle from the shoulder turret, empty the two 1-ton ammo bunkers and replace as desired. Some of the combinations include a pair of ER PPC's and one additional ER Medium Laser; three ER Large Lasers; one LRM-10 and one LRM-20 with a ton of ammo per; etc, etc, etc...= Senior Tech Adelina Ravensworth, Pilot Cpl. Bonifacius Kellendonck and the Naysmith Assigned to the First Army XXI Corps, 99th Royal BattleMech Division in the Terran Military Region in 2760. When the Periphery Uprising happened the whole Corps was redeployed to the Federated Suns Military Region District One, to provide a stabilizing influence as FedSuns forces were deployed to the Periphery to bring them into line. In 2768 the DropShip carrying the tech support section was destroyed on the run into the Terran system to toss Stefan Amaris off the throne. The Naysmith hold the record on the most money spent on repairing a 'Mech to date - 41,316,000 cbills, the highest number of 'Mechs recovered - 288, the most time spent in a hanger being repaired - 2 years, 24 days, 16 hours, 28 seconds. Standard weapon package was a pair of ER PPC and the second ER Medium Laser. Senior Tech Barto Hirszon, Pilot Sgt. Hibari Kazima and the Angela Assigned to 14th Army, VIII Corps, 135th Royal BattleMech Division was deployed in the Draconis Combine Military Region until it was called to Terra for the invasion where the unit took 45% casualties. S. Tech Hirszon had the Angela shot up under him when the R & R section he was leading to a just completed battle that was already being recovered was ambushed by the other units security section. He managed to extract the R & R section and call in a nearby company to seal the other R & R unit away from reinforcements and force its surrender, followed by its destruction as the unit chose to shoot its prisoners and try to fight its way out. Standard weapon package was the three ER Large Lasers. After the war the unit went on Exodus. Further history is unknown. Senior Tech Angelina Jackson, Pilot Sgt. Elida Nichols and the Archibald Baird Assigned to the Mercenary Tech Unit McKinney's Wrenches on contract to the Federated Suns Unit 1st Argyle Lancers to clean up a battlefield that a detachment had made when it fought a raiding group of pirates on Lackland. The local militia misunderstood the coordinates they were given and commenced a sustained artillery bombardment of the given site till they ran out of rounds. The unit lost its two-lance security section, its one lance 'Mech recovery section, company of hazardous waste carriers, company of scrap metal/salvage flat beds, medical section. The survivors of the unit, back at base, after a day of not being able to reach the detachment sent out a scout helicopter and found the devastated site. There were no survivors, nor any equipment to salvage and the wreckage was considered too scattered for the site to be economical to be cleaned up. The unit went from a reinforced company to a reinforced lance overnight. The company's senior officer was the MechWarrior in charge of the bases security detail as both the CO and the XO were at the site directing recovery operations. The new Senior Tech concurred with the new CO that the unit was no longer able to complete its contract with only four BattleMechs, five trucks, 40 people and a crewed DropShip. The 1st Argyle Lancers Detachment Commander agreed and wrote a note to the Review Board regarding the incident asking the survivors not to be penalized for not fulfilling the contract given the situation. The unit returns to Mercenary's Star and is disbanded. Originally deployed throughout the Star League, then died out as Utility Mech production was shifted to BattleMech production after the fall of the Star League. Of the three original production sites, none survived the First Succession War and the plans were lost when the last site was destroyed and the capability to reverse engineer the design was lost as the last BMR-1 U'Mech was scrapped during the Third Succession War.
